Winterline

“Let us love winter, for it is the spring of genius.”
–Pietro Aretino

Winter is often compared to a depressing season when we put comparisons to the different seasons but I’ve always been fond of winters. There is a privacy about it which no other season gives you.

And in Mussoorie, I got to witness a beautiful phenomenon – called the “Winterline”.

From mid-October to January, when the sun sets, the western horizon turns a myriad combination of yellow, red, orange and mauve.

The phenomenon is unique to Mussoorie and a part of Switzerland. The sun drops behind a false horizon, a gray and mauve strip, with a bright line of yellow and orange colors at its upper end.

It occurs due to the refraction of sunlight at a particular angle, visible only from mountain areas with a long, clear valley towards the west.

‘Winterline Carnival’ is also organized in Mussoorie in December.

The entire town would bear a festive look during this event and the entire Mall road, as well as all the shops and hotels, are nicely decorated.

“Little darling, it’s been a long cold lonely winter
Little darling, it feels like years since it’s been here
Here comes the sun
Here comes the sun, and I say
It’s all right”

– George Harrison
